4 methods for corrosion protection in offshore applications

What you need to know about offshore applications?

When selecting products for corrosion protection, we must take into account that we have to deal with a hostile environment. Permanent presence of moisture and salt air, in combination with UV radiation accelerates the corrosion process. And this is not the only problem. In the tidal zone and the splash water zone abrasion occurs. What is the result? Maintenance or replacement costs for severely affected components.

ISO 20340- is a very important standard for corrosion protection systems in offshore application (performance requirements for corrosion protection systems based paint, used for applications ofshore and auxiliary structures).

Tested products

·         Proguard CN 200

·         Proguard CN 100 iso

·         Ceramic-Polymer SF/LF

·         Ceramic-Polymer SF/LF-3

Test procedure in accordance with ISO 20340

25 week cycles (over 6 months) as per following pattern::

-          3 days of simulated weathering, UV radiation and water condensation (each exposure lasting 4 hours)

-          3 days of constant exposure to the salt substance (5% sodium chloride) at a temperature of 35 ° C

-          One day exposure to thermal shock (cold chamber at a temperature of -20 ° C)

Only very resistant protection products can meet this kind of hard. Simulation marine conditions using UV radiation, permanent humidity and salt would put to the test substance any conventional protection system. The only challenge was represented by thermal shock. The remaining water freezes on the surface of test. In most cases, the ice breaks and falls off the surface protection.

The corrosion protection applied showed no defects such as blisters, cracks or peeling. All 4 products had very good adhesion to the surface. There were no traces of corrosion between the protection system and metal structure.

Proguard CN 200 corrosion protection system has got the certification  of „German standard KTW“ for heated drinking water up to 85°C.

Proguard CN 200 was being tested recently by an independent institute for hygiene technology. The „German standard DVGW - process sheet W270 (2007/11)“ specifies extensive guide lines.

The exposure period of protection was 3 months. Tested articles were checked for possible formation of microorganisms. Microbial film remained well below the limited values. ProGuard CN 200 is a product recommended for drinking water applications .
