Case study: internal corrosion protection for gas pipelines

Pipeline corrosion protection

Considering climate change, natural gas and forms of energy with low emissions are becoming increasingly important. According to experts, natural gas will replace crude oil as the dominant source of energy in the next two decades. This will influence the technology and capability to exploit.

Problems of corrosion and abrasion

In this article we refer to the "Tange Bijar" project. In this site, 10 million m3 of natural gas extracted daily. The gas contains a large amount of hydrogen sulfide (H2S), and it requires special treatment.

During the extraction process, natural gas is wet, and this means potentially corrosive. Other issues are related to pressure (in this case 250 bar) and extracted sediment abrasion on the inner walls of the pipes. Moreover, in an ambient temperature of about 60oC and under aggressive hydrogen sulphide is absolutely necessary to apply corrosion protection system for gas transport system.

The installation with corrosion risk

In the project "Tange Bijar" was implemented a series of slug catchers. Transport tube expanded as multiple parallel pipelines, their diameter is 1.43 m and length of 80 m. In these sections, the volume increases and the gas velocity is reduced. Also, sediment and moisture are separated in a tank and removed afterwards.

What product was applied?

Product Proguard CN 100 LV-2 was selected for the protection of the sludge catcher. With a thickness of 1.000 micrometres product guarantees chemical resistance to hydrogen sulfide aggressiveness and anti-abrasion protection. Thus was obtained lasting corrosion protection and maintenance costs have been significantly reduced.
