A corrosion case

The municipal pool in Archie Dillon Sportplex (Timmins, Canada) was closed for annual maintenance actions. Also this year,  the usual water treatment actions were replaced, because of the risk that the whole structure of the building to be affected.

The state of degradation has evolved so rapidly that the council has offered a budget of $ 93.900 for repairs.

The report mentions corrosion in the floor of the mechanical room and four metal straps holding up the air supply vent.

It seems that the main culprit for this situation is sanitizing system used by the administration.

Using electrolysis, the system uses dissolved salt to produce hypochlorous acid and sodium hypochlorite, two common chemical producing substances used in the process of sanitizing pools. By this method, the pool is chlorinated as it would be directly added to pure chlorine.

“There are many stories around about the benefits and disadvantages of salt systems, but the one issue has always been whether the facility was built to handle the higher level of corrosive activity in the building,” explained Glenn Thurston, the person responsible with maintenance

The effects of corrosion

For the chlorination system was needed a concrete adapted to the environment, the element that was missing from the pool. Not designed for salt water, the concrete began to be affected by corrosion, which was extended in the pool. This could endanger the entire structure of the building. Such events highlight the importance of knowing the substances involved in lawsuits, and the best measures to prevent the dangers.
